21 June 2011 – AccTech Systems deploys Microsoft EPM Solution for one of South Africa’s Large Specialist Retail Group

One of South Africa’s largest Health and Beauty focused specialist retail groups has selected Microsoft Project and Portfolio Server 2010 as the solution to drive their project and portfolio execution and resource utilisation. To this end, AccTech Systems was engaged for the deployment of Microsoft Enterprise Portfolio and Project Management (PPM) solution.

In a phased approach, the solution had to provide an overview of all current and planned projects for the short to medium term planning horizon, as well as provide accurate demand management information to allow for effective and efficient resource planning and utilisation (up to 12 months into the future).

Through the use of the Project and Resource Centre functionalities in Project Server 2010, the Group was able to, for the first time, gain an enterprise-wide perspective on all the projects currently in execution and from this establish the effect on the utilisation of their resources across the full project spectrum. Based on the information provided by the solution, the Group is then able to leverage the flexibility of the integrated resource analysis functionality. They can now create different portfolio scenarios by either including or excluding projects as well as by changing project commencement dates based on mission criticality. In each of these scenario establishment methods, the solution provides an indication of specific resource / skill deficits and surpluses and enables the creation of a first level portfolio execution plan based purely on demand management trends.

If the first level portfolio execution plan does not meet Group objectives, the resource / skill deficit and surplus report provides an accurate analysis of the specific skills required as well as the periods when this requirement will be realised. From this information, they can determine whether a resource hiring or outsourcing strategy would be appropriate.

“The main challenges we faced in this project was the alignment of the solution with a recently redefined organisational project methodology and project governance process, while introducing new portfolio strategic concepts. Once again, AccTech was able to deliver to deliver this and meet the client expectations and project goals,” says Jannie van Aswegen, Divisional Director at AccTech Systems.

Project and Portfolio Management helps organisations gain visibility and control across all projects which in turn lead to greatly enhanced decision-making. As part of this specific EPM deployment AccTech utilised the full Microsoft Project and Portfolio stack of products. This included Project Professional 2010; Project Server 2010; SharePoint Server 2010; SQL Server 2008 R2 and Office 2010.”
