13 April 2011 – AccTech Systems deploys Microsoft EPM Solution for large International Energy and Chemicals Company

One of the world’s largest energy and chemical companies has selected Microsoft Project and Portfolio Server 2010 as the solution to drive their project and portfolio strategy and execution. AccTech Systems, nominated by Microsoft Services as implementation partner, engaged in the deployment of Microsoft Enterprise Portfolio and Project Management (PPM) with Microsoft Services. In a multi-phased approach, once completed the Microsoft PPM deployment will be one of the largest deployments ever undertaken in South Africa.

“This project has been a great challenge for AccTech Systems, both in terms of scale and the dynamics of delivering a solution that closely aligns the PPM with the ERP considerations and expectations of our client. I do believe that the quality, skills and experience of our expert Microsoft PPM and SharePoint Dev team has enabled us to finalise the first phase of the implementation with great success,” says Jannie van Aswegen, Divisional Director at AccTech Systems. “One of the main challenges we faced in this project was the integration between the organisation’s tier 1 ERP system and the Microsoft solution. The unique requirements of this solution pathed the way to a custom developed integration between the ERP system and PPM, with AccTech providing the simplified and generic interfaces to 3rd party developers of the ERP system,” says van Aswegen.

“Project and Portfolio Management helps organisations such as ourselves gain visibility and control across all divisions and projects which in turn leads to greatly enhanced decision-making,” says the organisations head of business applications. As part of our specific EPM deployment AccTech utilised the full Microsoft Project and Portfolio stack of products. This included Project Professional 2010; Project Server 2010; SharePoint Server 2010; Visio 2010; Office 2010 and InfoPath 2010.”

“We had to execute with very innovative thinking and real outside-the-box solutions to cater for the requirements and demands of the client. Some of the customisations include the project workspace risk list that needed to be customised to enable users to make use of selection lists when capturing risk impact, probability and category details – delivering central risk and issue management that spans across all projects and even portfolio planning activities. Integrated Change Control and its associated processes and workflows were implemented by making use of custom workflows and custom InfoPath forms to drive and orchestrate these processes. Furthermore, to enable developers from the ERP system to interface their system with PPM, AccTech developers had to create simplified interfaces that were easy to understand and use by the ERP development team. But most importantly – we had to keep focus on the reality that the system will need to be upgraded at some point – and as such we always ensured that the solutions we deploy are maintainable, scalable and only customise it if there is no other alternative,” says van Aswegen.
